WHO WE ARE: ALEXUS BROWNE

Sisters

“Realize the value of your input in every space that you’re in, but especially in your closest sphere—your family. Charity begins at home. You can change the world, if you start at your left, right, front, and back.”

Q: What does being a sister mean to you in 2020?

A: Family is very important to me, and being one of ten siblings, I hold my role as a sister in the highest regard. To me, being a sister means being a friend, a confidant, a shoulder, an encourager, a dream harvester, a mirror of honesty, a gap-filler, a prayer warrior, and a ride or die.

Q: How have the injustices against the black community impacted your view of family?

A: It has expanded my view of family past my own. I see my siblings, my parents, my cousins, and my friends in the faces of my neighbors. It has made me feel the pain of their families as my own, and in the same breath, it has taught me the strength of unity. Family is a microcosm of the greater world around us.

Q: How do you feel being a black woman in the world today?

A: I am extremely proud to be a black woman. Despite the fact that there is much work to be done in this struggle for true equality, I would choose this life again and again. There is much to admire about the resilience, strength and poise that our very existence so often calls for. We’re simply cut different.

Q: Are there any additional thoughts or comments that you would like to add?

A: Love conquers all.
