Orlando's Gerald Law II has been distinguishing himself in the city's music scene with conceptual crossovers that bring music into intersection with things like technology and social ideas. The latest manifestation of that is his new album, From G. to You, Vol. III.

Meet Gerald Law II | Musician & Music Educator. The ‘Who We Are’ project has been the toughest body of work in my career to this point. The challenge was to create music based on experiences that were not solely my own.

In February and March, artists from Timucua’s interdisciplinary Artists in Resonance project will be featured. First up is Orlando-based Law, who leads a group featuring his brothers, musician Joel Law and visual artist Jamiel Law.

Drummer, composer, and band leader, Gerald Law II, built a reputation as the go-to drummer for jazz and R&B artists in Central Florida. If you’ve seen him play, you know why he’s affectionately called “the smiling drummer.” From his drum throne, Law drives the rhythm and elevates the performance of everyone around him. That includes his band of versatile virtuosos, The Clutch, who bring audiences to incredible heights with music that always grooves, whether simmering with soulful energy or exploding in creative improvisation.

Having released two albums in 2020 (From G to You: Vol. I & Vol. II), Law is poised to break out in the coming years with high profile performances and more relentlessly creative compositions and recordings. He followed these releases with albums in 2021 (From G. to You, Vol. III) and 2022 (Sensory Vibes, Vol. I). Maybe his famous on-stage smile comes from feeling so at home making music—or maybe he’s just happy to see us.

WHY I DO WHAT I DO

PASSION

Life can be hard. It’s amazing to have an outlet that not only serves other people, but also heals you in the process. Creating is a major part of what makes me tick and I am driven to be at my best.

PURPOSE

We are more than what we do. It is important to me to use what I do in an impactful way. My instrument is not the end of the story. It is a means to communicate and connect with others.

LEGACY

My parents set the example that our passions can become our living. I want my kids to know that their ideas are valuable and can be shaped into a livelihood for them and their families.

FUN FACTS

  • The cello was actually my first instrument. I started playing it when I was 6 years old.

  • Football was in my future but moms wasn’t having it lol. Now I’m invested as a hardcore fan only.

  • Yohanna and I got Bella right after getting married. Wedding in August 2017, birthdays in September and October (both turned 26), and we added Bella to our family that November.

  • I used to take naps while my college roommate practiced trumpet. This isn’t as true anymore now that I’m a father of two lol.

  • They are the most annoying creatures on the planet. That is all.
